How to get a document Legalised
A document is “Legalised” when it has obtained the UK Government’s confirmation (by way of an Apostille stamp) that a public official’s signature, seal or stamp on the document is genuine.
A Notary Public is a public official.
After a Notary has signed and sealed a document, for example, a certified copy of the photographic details page of a passport it can then be Legalised.
In order to get a document Notarised, it is necessary to make an appointment to see a Notary Public. In addition to meeting you and seeing the document, the Notary will also need to see evidence of address to comply with Government Regulations (official photographic identity document, such as a current valid passport or photo-card driving licence and evidence of address, such as a bank statement or utility bill which is less than 3 months old.
The Govenment body that Legalises documents in the UK is the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, known as the FCO. There are two Legalisation offices in England, one in Milton Keynes and the other in London.
The method of Legalisation is by the affixing of a certificate called an “Apostille” to a document which confirms the document has been signed, sealed or stamped by a public official such as Notary Public.
For some countries Legalisation by way of an Apostille may not be enough and in addition to the Apostille, consular Legalisation may also be needed.
