US Embassy London – Notarisation of documents

The US Embassy London provides the following advice on how to have US documents Notarised (Notarized) in London for use in the US:

“ ..you may have your documents notarized under the two-step British system.

Step 1: Sign your documents in front of a notary public.

Step 2: Send the documents to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) Legalisation Office, which will legalize the signature and stamp of the notary public by means of an apostille, or certificate. Please see The British Foreign and Commonwealth Legalisation Office website for further information.

Documents notarized this way comply with the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents, October 5, 1961, to which the United States became a party effective October 15, 1981, and should be accepted for use in the United States.”

Kobalt Notaries Limited in London can assist with Notarising US documents, including:

  • Warranty Deeds
  • Bills of Sale
  • Assignment Deeds
  • Lease Contracts
  • Trust Agreements
  • Spousal Waiver Forms
  • Statements of Consent or Special Circumstances: Issuance of a Passport to a Minor under age of 16
  • General Indemnity Agreements
  • Sale and Purchase Agreements

We can also advise on and deal with any Legalisation issues that apply as Legalisation requirements vary from state to state in the US.

Documents that need to be Notarised for the US often include an “Acknowledgment” which is a statement for the Notary Public to complete in order to verify that the signatory of the document has appeared before the Notary, is known to the Notary or has been identified by the Notary, and has signed the document in the presence of the Notary.
